NFL Star Player comes out of the closet…in new book, Football Games!

Football Games tells the story of a gay and closeted professional football player who is fighting against his own internal demons, and the pressure he faces on the home front from his boyfriend of 4 years.  This player must decide, if he will remain a successful and closeted football player, or blaze the trail of being the nation’s first openly gay NFL player.

As he struggles to keep his personal life private, his partner has other desires.  This is the tale of a hidden life style, jealousy, rage and whether or not a young superstar can overcome the challenges of being gay, black and living in the closet.

Recently, professional athletes in other sports have announced that they are openly gay or lesbian.  Professional football has been stigmatized as the most homophobic sport.  It appears to be difficult for some players and fans to seriously support a gay player, assuming he is not masculine or athletic enough.  In Football Games, can our hero change the stereotype?

Here is an excerpt from my new book, Football Games…

“So you want me to hold a news conference, come out of the so-called closet and tell the world that I’m in love with you.  Will that make you secure with my love?”

“Not exactly, but man…what is so wrong with that?” 

Jason was yelling again.  Brenton has said he finds Jason to actually be very sexy when he is mad.  When he looks at him, he sometimes wonders why he didn’t pursue a career in professional sports.  At six foot one and 185 pounds, Jason is a force on the basketball court, with a mean jump shot.  Brenton is definitely attracted to basketball player types. Jason works out as much as Brenton and his body is just as hard.  Jason’s body is what makes, defending him on the court, wrestling with him in their bedroom or making love with him after a good fight, so much fun.  He is that Chocolate High that India.Aire and Musiq Soulchild sing about.  He is successful in his own right, rising the ranks at Benington’s, a five-star restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel to become the executive chef.  Jason is not lacking in money, professional development or motivation.  Brenton loves that about him.

“There is nothing wrong with it.  And one day I’m going to do just that.  I’m going to scream to the top of my lungs that you are my man.” 

“Yeah, just not today.”  Jason acquiesced. 

“No, babe.  Not today.”  Brenton said softly.

Why is it that homosexuality and professional sports have to be incompatible when there have to be gay athletes who are active in their sport?

What does former NFL player Kwame Harris have to say about that?

It is the opinion of some that professional football is the most heterosexist, yet homoerotic sport.  There is plenty of affection for teammates displayed on and off the field.  Chest bumps, flying leaps into each other’s butts or the encouraging pat on the backside.  All of these actions are perfectly acceptable within the fraternity of American football, but men are less than masculine (and heterosexual) if exhibited in any other context.  With all of the 6, 7 & 8 figure salaries, it makes one wonder if anyone has traveled to a country where physical affection among males is not only accepted, but also encouraged.  And if heterosexual males may show affection, why is affection amongst homosexuals so threatening?  According to news articles, Harris’ former team (San Francisco 49ers) and some former teammates were not concerned about his sexual orientation when he was outed earlier this year.  Now that he has spoken publicly about his sexuality, hopefully, others will deem a players’ sexuality insignificant in professional sports.
